University Reading Weeks

Share

Details

On average a student loses two months of reading skills over the summer. This is known as the summer slide. Attending at least five weeks of a summer reading program has been proven to reverse this problem. A hallmark of Project Transformation’s literacy program is inviting volunteers in to read one-on-one with our participants each day. Volunteers read with one child at a time through three rotations, so you will usually read with three kids each morning.
First time volunteers need to arrive early at 9:30 for an orientation. Returning volunteers may arrive at 9:50 to read with children form 10 – 12. We work very hard to ensure that we have the correct number of volunteers each day, but occasionally we will have more kids or more volunteers. On days where we have more children than volunteers you may be asked to read with two children having them take turns reading and listening. When we have more volunteers than children, we will ask for volunteers to help out with our art or recreation lessons.
